Dear My Brother

This work is a letter from me to my older brother. But it’s not a direct message—instead, it’s made up of words and photographs from people I met on the streets. Facing my brother scared me. So, since I was 18, I chose to spend my days listening to strangers, writing down their stories, and taking their portraits. Wanting so badly to understand my brother, I kept turning to the words and gazes of “someone else”—someone who wasn’t him.

Over the past ten—no, twenty-nine—years, I’ve kept asking myself what my relationship with my brother really means. This piece is the result of that long, layered process. Now that things between us have begun to soften, I finally feel ready to share this work with the world.

It’s titled Dear My Brother-but in many ways, it is also meant for you. A letter I’m sending out, in hopes it reaches someone who needs it.
